Newport - Honolulu :
The 1928 Transpac Race

In 2007, the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum teamed up with the Transpacific Yacht Club to present an exhibit inspired by the fact that the 1928 Transpac Race started from our very own Newport Harbor!

The Transpacific Yacht Race exhibit focused on the majestic wooden yachts of yesteryear's 1928 race AND the 2007 race with ultra-modern, carbon graphite and fiberglass racing yachts. The race in 1928 began in the waters off Balboa, where the racers could go around the channel islands, like Catalina island, any way they chose, with the ultimate goal being to beat their five other competitors to Honolulu, Hawaii. The 2007 race began off San Pedro and proceeded directly to Catalina's west end, the only mark on the course, and then directly on to the finish line in Honolulu, just beyond the Diamond Head crater.
