TRANSPAC Elapsed Time Clock/Trophy Reset in Ceremony Honoring 2009 Winner

Neville Crichton of New Zealand, winner of the 2009 Elasped Time Trophy, was honored at a ceremony hosted by Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean and Transpacific Yacht Club

Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean hosted a reception on Friday, July 9th from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a ceremony to reset the Elapsed Time Clock on the Transpacific Yacht Race Elapsed Time Trophy for the newest record holder, Neville Crichton of New Zealand.  Crichton's 100' "rocket ship" Alfa Romeo broke the old record in 2009 previously held by Hasso Plattner and Morning Glory.  Alfa Romeo covered the 2225 miles from Long Beach to Honolulu in a record: 5 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes and 20 seconds eclipsing the previous record set in 2005 by a full day.

Also featured in the ceremony was past Elapsed Time Trophy record holders Bill Lee and Roy Pat Disney as well as the designer and crafter of the trophy Andrea Favilli.  Leslie DeMeuse-Disney was also in attendance.  The Transpacific Yacht Race was started in 1906 and is one of yachting’s premier offshore races and attracts entrants from all over the world.

In 2007, Roy E. Disney offered the Elapsed Time Trophy to the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum on permanent loan.  Disney, who competed 15 times in the Transpacific Yacht Race, commissioned the trophy in 1997.  “Roy was very happy to have the trophy here.  He also encouraged the idea that the Museum would be the home of the Transpac capturing its history and conveying its challenge through exhibitions,” says Jim Reed, Board President of the Nautical Museum.

The Elapsed Time Trophy is currently on display as part of the Museum’s newest exhibition, Sea of Adventure which features three distinct areas that examine the past, present and future of nautical exploration.
