Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean Co-Sponsors Annual Western Ship Model Conference and Exhibit

The 7th Annual Western Ship Model Conference and Exhibit anchors in Newport Beach beginning March 29 through April 3, 2011. The Balboa Pavilion Grand Ballroom will showcase the exhibit portion of the conference with hundreds of ship models ranging from historic to contemporary vessels on display throughout the duration of the five-day event. Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean will host the conference events and panel discussions on April 1 and 2. The museum will also present a special Western Ship Model Conference edition of the Waterman Lecture Series on March 31 titled “The United States Navel Academy Museum – Today” with the museum’s Curator of Ship Models, Donald R. Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean Brings the Tales of the Sea to Life

Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean teams up with South Coast Repertory (SCR) to bring the stories of the deep blue sea to life with the educational children’s program, Sea Tales. Through dynamic interactive storytelling, hands on crafts and live music, children ages 2 – 5 are introduced to a wide variety of marine topics while enjoying the maritime art exhibits and live sea creatures in the touch tanks of the Nautical Museum. Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean joins the American Legion Post 291, the American Legion Yacht Club and the Wooden Hull Yacht Club in sponsorship of the second annual Wooden Boat Festival to take place at the American Legion Yacht Club of Newport Beach on Saturday, October 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A celebratory opening reception offering live music, complimentary wine and appetizers will be hosted at American Legion Yacht Club on Friday, October 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Download complete press release.

Newport Harbor Nautical Museum Launches Extraordinary People Exhibition Featuring the Collection, Nick Scandone: A Local Hero

On October 19, 2010 Newport Harbor Nautical Museum will introduce its newest exhibit, Extraordinary People, an ongoing presentation of diverse and iconic heroes of the sea. The exhibition will open with a retrospective of local hero, the late Nick Scandone, a Paralympic gold medalist in sailing. A celebratory reception and fundraiser will be held at the museum from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Gary Jobson, President of U.S. Sailing will deliver a special presentation in Nick’s honor and will be joined onstage by past, present and future sailing Olympians and Paralympians. TRANSPAC ELAPSED TIME CLOCK/TROPHY TO BE RESET HONORING 2009 WINNER, NEVILLE CRICHTON OF NEW ZEALAND AT CEREMONY HOSTED BY

Newport Harbor Nautical Museum/ExplorOcean will be hosting a wine and cheese reception on Friday, July 9th from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a ceremony to reset the Elapsed Time Clock on the Transpacific Yacht Race Elapsed Time Trophy for the newest record holder, Neville Crichton of New Zealand. Crichton's 100' "rocket ship" Alfa Romeo broke the old record in 2009 previously held by Hasso Plattner and Morning Glory. Alfa Romeo covered the 2225 miles from Long Beach to Honolulu in a record: 5 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes and 20 seconds eclipsing the previous record set in 2005 by a full day. Newport Harbor Nautical Museum recently announced plans for expansion to become ExplorOcean; an interactive cultural destination center presenting engaging collections,
interactive exhibitions, and educational programming. As the expansion process progresses, the organization will continue operations with the mission of connecting people to the adventure and mystery of the sea. To further enhance this mission, ExplorOcean, Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, proudly presents Sea of Adventure; an interactive exploration of “Man & the Sea.” The exhibition dives deep into the romance of the ocean, it’s relationship to mankind, marine biology and technical advances, inspiring the visitor to get out there and explore the wonders of the ocean.
