The Harbor Column:Honor the week by wearing a life vest

A new exhibit is being unveiled at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum. "Across the Seas: a History of Navigation" is an interesting title for the exhibit that will showcase the history of navigation on the high seas. Today, most boaters could not imagine cruising on the Pacific Ocean without the use of GPS chart plotters, autopilot, radar, and cell phone.

This interactive, self-guided tour will take you back in time to when sailors relied on the stars, the sun, wind and the currents to find their destinations. Kind of reminds me how I first learned how to navigate except I had NOAA charts to reference and plot a course with "DRs." Read the Full Story.

An exploration of history
Museum exhibit offers a historical perspective on nautical navigation techniques.

A new exhibit at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum examines the history of navigation, from the primitive navigation techniques of the Vikings and Polynesians to global-positioning satellite technology.

"Navigation is one of those skills we use every day without ever thinking about it," said David Muller, executive director of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum. "We wanted to do something that would examine navigation from a historical perspective." Read the Full Story.

Welcoming Roy Disney to Newport Beach

It seems there ought to be more local folks welcoming film maker Roy Disney to Newport Beach. The nephew of Walt Disney, he has been a longtime senior executive of The Walt Disney Company. UCSB Professor Emeritus to Discuss Enviro Reform

Brian Fagan, professor emeritus of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, will give a talk on environmental reform at 7 tonight at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum as part of the museum's Waterman Lecture Series.

Fagan wrote the book "The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations." His lecture is titled "The Great Warming: Land, Oceans and the Story of the Silent Elephant in the Room." The talk will examine the current policies of the California Water Resources Department and environmental reform. Read the full story in the Daily Pilot. (January 22, 2009)
